“AdaCamp DC was a fantastic experience, one of the best conferences I’ve been to!” – AdaCamp DC attendee

AdaCamp attendees
Applications for AdaCamp San Francisco are still open but closing today! AdaCamp SF is a two-day unconference for supporters of women in open technology and culture held on Saturday June 8 & Sunday June 9, 2013, in San Francisco, California. At an unconference, the topics of conference sessions are chosen by the conference participants on the day of the conference. Topics may include fan fiction and fan culture, open education, open source, Wikipedia and related projects, open data, open government, social justice, recruiting and retaining women, activism, parenting, any intersectional topics, career development, and of course, feminism.

This year AdaCamp has two tracks. The main track is for people who identify as significantly female, and includes unconference sessions, an Impostor Syndrome workshop, tutorials, lightning talks, and a hackathon (several hours for group collaboration on projects, not necessarily coding or hacking). The allies track is for people of any gender, and consists of a 2 hour Allies Workshop on Saturday morning, teaching simple ways to support women in open technology and culture, followed by an unconference for the rest of the day.

AdaCamp is invitation-only, but we encourage everyone interested in attending to apply. You do not have to write code, have a job in open tech/culture, be a certain age, or be anything other than a supporter of women in open tech/culture. We value diversity of all sorts: age, race, geographical locations, language, sexuality, gender identity, educational background, hobbies, spiritual or religious beliefs, and other areas. Find out more about the diversity of previous AdaCamp attendees by reading the final report for the most recent AdaCamp. Child-feeding parents are welcome. Unfortunately no further travel funding is available.

If you want to know more about whether AdaCamp SF is right for you, read the final report from the most recent AdaCamp, AdaCamp DC.

Applications to AdaCamp San Francisco will close in 24 hours on Wednesday May 8 11:59 PM California time (06:59AM Thursday UTC).

“The experience profoundly changed me. I’m looking into volunteer and educational opportunities that I would not have considered before attending AdaCamp. And I really want to share what I’m doing.” – AdaCamp attendee

We thank our gold level sponsors Mozilla, Automattic and Google Site Reliability Engineering; and our silver level sponsors Linux Foundation, Red Hat, Intel, and Puppet Labs; for their support of AdaCamp San Francisco.

To learn more about sponsoring AdaCamp, email sponsors@adainitiative.org.

This is a call to share images, audio and/or videos dealing with gender and ICT, women doing and thinking technologies, sysadmins, phreakers and makers too. In the next months, some work will be achieved to edit and finalise a documentary about the contributions of women to computer sciences and more concretely to free software and hackers cultures. Lelacoders is a cyberfeminist and activist research project developed by the informal collective donestech.net.
In the past three years, we have travel around (barcelona, gijon, madrid, sevilla, amsterdam, berlin, tunes, sao paolo) in order to interview in a voluntary base 25 women developers to know what they do, why, how and thus get closer to their pathways and perceptions of technologies and their development. You can find more information in the N-1 group of the project and in this article in english resuming the research until now.
Lelacoders has been granted for the first time support from Studio XX during the months of April and May 2013. During this time we aim at capturing and editing the interviews, develop an animation of the HerStory in Computer Sciences, think better the script and also prepare a crowdfunding campaign for later. Half of the amount will be invested in infrastructure in order to launch a center for training to audiovisual production with free software tools in Calafou. The other half will be used to end the documentary, make the post-production and translations and make its diffusion in internet under a license CC BY- SA (Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike).
If you know somebody, or you are yourself counting with some graphic or audiovisual material that could be of interest to this documentary (e.g actions, talks, workshops, gender and ict festivals, ladyfests, hacker camps etc) please contact us lelacoders@riseup.net so we can give you more details about where you can upload it and in order to label the material (where, when, who) and provide details about authoring in case it appears in the last version. The final aim is to count with more audiovisual resources as currently the major part of contents are interviews which are not enough to give an idea of the richness of the current situation.
Please spread this call slowly, think in the persons that could have a real interest for it and do not share it within commercial social networks platforms
Thank you very much!

Tatiana Bazzichelli // Valie Djordjevic // Andrea Goetzke // Kathy Rae Huffman // Claudia Kefer // Julia Kloiber // Lisa Lang // Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen // Diana McCarty // Michelle Thorne

Berlin has a rich and long-standing tradition of women engaged in the fields of media arts, media activism and digital culture. Today over half of Berlin’s independent project spaces and initiatives revolving around the themes of tech, media and digital culture are run by women. A broad range of female curators and activists continue to shape net politics – initiating independent programmes, hosting events and leading research at Berlin’s universities.

Despite this large female contingent, and in a city where the workforce is generally evenly distributed, it is at odds that the theoretical discourse on media art and net activism, executive roles and directorships, as well panelists and participants at events and festivals, are still male-dominated. In a forward-thinking city like Berlin, this ongoing gap should be addressed so that the wider fields of media arts and activism are fully inclusive of the multitude of female skills and viewpoints on offer.

At this event, SUPERMARKT highlights and showcases a selection of the women who have played an important role in shaping the profile of Berlin as a digital culture city. We will learn more about their history, career paths, and the narratives of their work and life. Ten inspiring women in the field will join us, and answer questions against the backdrop of their own lives and careers, including what drives them to continue the work they do, what have been the crucial moments of their careers, and who are their professional mentors, support networks, and inspirations.

This evening will provide an opportunity to get to know this community, share inspirations, identify trending themes in the field, and gauge both common resources and grounds for future collaborations. Whilst the focus of this event will be on the diversity of Berlin’s female media art community, anyone is of course invited to attend.

Presenters are Tatiana Bazzichelli, Valie Djordjevic, Andrea Goetzke, Kathy Rae Huffman, Claudia Kefer, Julia Kloiber, Lisa Lang, Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen, Diana McCarty & Michelle Thorne. The evening will be moderated & facilitated by Ela Kagel & Michelle O’Brien.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user the freedom to use, copy, study, change, and improve it. FOSS contributors believe that this is the best way to develop software because it benefits society, creates a fun collaborative community around a project, and allows anyone to make innovative changes that reach many people.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for FOSS projects. Participants work remotely from home, while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within their project’s community. The application deadline for Google Summer of Code is May 3 and the program dates are June 17 to September 23. The stipend for the program is $5,000 (USD). The organizations that will participate in Google Summer of Code this year will be announced on April 8. Starting to work with an organization as early as possible and making a few code contributions to the project you want to work on is essential for a successful proposal.

http://code.google.com/soc

In an effort to get more women involved in FOSS, a number of organizations are offering Outreach Program for Women internships through a program organized by the GNOME Foundation. The internships have the same structure, the same stipend and similar program dates. The application deadline for the Outreach Program for Women is May 1 and the program dates are June 17 to September 23. Unlike in Google Summer of Code, participants do not need to be students and non-coding projects are available. In addition to coding, projects include such tasks as graphic design, documentation, bug triage and marketing. To apply, you need to connect with an organization early and make a few contributions relevant to the project you want to work on.

https://live.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen

The mentorship opportunities are also available throughout the year for anyone interested in getting started contributing to FOSS outside of the formal internship program. In addition to the organizations participating in the Outreach Program for Women, more organizations that offer informal mentorship to all newcomers are listed here:

http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/Mentors

Please consider applying for Google Summer of Code or FOSS Outreach Program for Women, encourage someone else to apply, or help spread the word by forwarding this message to any interested university and community groups.

“AdaCamp DC was a fantastic experience, one of the best conferences I’ve been to!” – AdaCamp DC attendee

Applications for AdaCamp San Francisco are now open!

The main track is for people who identify as significantly female, and includes unconference sessions, an Impostor Syndrome workshop, tutorials, lightning talks, and a hackathon (several hours for group collaboration on projects, not necessarily cod

AdaCamp attendees
ing or hacking). The allies track is for people of any gender, and consists of a 2 hour Allies Workshop on Saturday morning, teaching simple ways to support women in open technology and culture.

A limited number of travel sponsorships will be available. Free childcare will be available (with some restrictions, e.g., age) and child-feeding parents are welcome.

If you want to know more about whether AdaCamp SF is right for you, read the final report from the most recent AdaCamp, AdaCamp DC.

Applications for travel assistance close April 12, 2013. All other applications close April 30, 2013 or earlier if sold out.

“The experience profoundly changed me. I’m looking into volunteer and educational opportunities that I would not have considered before attending AdaCamp. And I really want to share what I’m doing.” – AdaCamp attendee
We thank our silver level sponsors for their support of AdaCamp San Francisco: Google Site Reliability Engineering, Linux Foundation, and Red Hat.

ELAS FAN TECH

Asistencia técnica: BEGO M. SANTIAGO e SERVANDO BARREIRO
Colaboración: M-ARTECH PLATFORM

12 ARTISTAS, 15 OBRAS

1. YASMINA MORÁN
TELEVOTÓN (2012)
Instalación interactiva
Idea y programación: Yasmina Morán
Producción: Ljudmila (Liubliana, Eslovenia) e ¿Interactivos? Medialab-Prado

3. BEGO M. SANTIAGO
LITTLE BOXES (2012)
Instalación audiovisual interactiva
Idea, visuales y mapping: Bego M. Santiago
Programación: Andrej Boleslavský y Pavel Karafiàt
Coopera: CIANT (International Centre for Art and New Technologies) Praga

10. MARIANA CARRANZA
CONSTELACIONES (2011)
Instalación interactiva
Idea y programación: Mariana Carranza
Agradecimientos: Blanca Regina, Guillermo Casado y Chris Sugrue

15. NURIA CANO
CUADERNO DE VIAJE (2012)
Instalación interactiva
Producción: Consellaría de Cultura do Goberno de Estremadura.
Programación: Andrej Boleslavský
Colabora: Centro de Arte e Novas Tecnoloxías de Praga (CIANT)
Producción: Ayudas a Artistas Plásticos Francisco Zurbarán.
